The Importance of Sun Protection while Visiting Hawaii

Visiting Hawaii is an unforgettable experience, filled with sun-soaked beaches, crystal-clear waters, and endless outdoor adventures. However, the tropical sun is intense, and protecting yourself from its harmful rays is essential for both your health and enjoyment. Let’s explore the importance of sun protection and provide practical tips to help you stay safe while enjoying Hawaii’s natural beauty.

Why Sun Protection Matters

Hawaii's location near the equator means the sun’s rays are stronger here than in many other places. Prolonged exposure can lead to painful sunburn, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer. On the water, the sun’s impact is amplified as UV rays reflect off the ocean surface, making proper protection essential for a safe and comfortable outing.

Our Favorite Sun Protection Gear

1. Sun-Protective Clothing Wearing the right clothing is one of the best ways to shield your skin from harmful UV rays. Look for:

  • Long-Sleeve Shirts: Opt for lightweight, moisture-wicking, and UPF-rated (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) shirts to keep you cool while providing excellent sun protection. Sun hoodies are a great option and some even have coverings for your face.
  • Wide-Brim Hats or Caps with Neck Flaps: These offer shade for your face, ears, and neck—areas particularly prone to sunburn.
  • Leggings: Protect your legs with UPF-rated leggings. I personally prefer white leggings as they reflect heat and help keep you cool under the tropical sun.

2. Polarized Sunglasses A good pair of polarized sunglasses is essential for any day on the water. They:

  • Reduce glare from the ocean, making it easier to spot fish, coral formations, and other underwater structures.
  • Protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.
  • Without sunglasses, your eyes strain to adjust to the intense brightness, often resulting in discomfort and headaches after prolonged exposure.

3. Reef-Safe Sunscreen Applying sunscreen is vital for exposed skin, but not all sunscreens are created equal. Hawaii has implemented strict regulations to protect its delicate marine ecosystems, banning sunscreens containing harmful chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate. These chemicals have been shown to damage coral reefs and harm marine life. Because sunscreens harmful to the reef cannot be sold in Hawaii, purchasing sunscreen locally, instead of bringing it from where your traveling from, can help ensure you’re using a product that’s safe for the environment.

Even with Hawaii's regulations, we've seen harmful products slip though the cracks, so when selecting sunscreen, look for products labeled "reef-safe" or "mineral-based," containing active ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Apply generously to your face, neck, ears, and any other exposed areas, and reapply every two hours or after swimming.

Extra Tips for Staying Sun-Safe

  • Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can worsen the effects of sun exposure, so drink plenty of water throughout your trip.
  • Plan Ahead: Check the UV index before heading out, and consider scheduling your activities during early morning hours when the sun is less intense. At ʻŌpelu Ocean Adventures, we start trips early to minimize exposure during the sun's peak hours.
  • Application Tips: For those used to traditional sunscreens, reef-safe options may seem a bit harder to rub in, and can often leave that dreaded blue-white cast. Don't worry, we've got some tips for you! First, we like to avoid sprayable reef-safe sunscreens, as they tend to spray out a bit too much and getting a good application is difficult. Instead, use a thin liquid sunscreen and apply small dots of it directly onto the skin in multiple areas before rubbing it in. This technique helps create an even layer, ensuring better coverage and easier application.

Protect Yourself, Protect the Ocean

By taking sun protection seriously, you’ll not only safeguard your health but also contribute to preserving Hawaii’s natural beauty.
